December 4, 2003 Meeting Recap

David Brooks,
Illustrator

David Brooks was the first speaker when LBMG affiliated with WOCMUG in August 2000. He made his second talk to our group at our December meeting. His technique, while still original, has evolved since his first speech. His method in 2000 was to sketch by hand with pencil, scan the sketch, use the Median Filter in Photoshop to thicken his strokes and do the coloring of the illustration in Photoshop using different layers for flexibility if the client changed the color. He changed his method since then, primarily because he found more consistency with color when he used Adobe Illustrator. He also became more comfortable drawing his sketches in Photoshop using his Wacom tablet. He converts his drawings from pixel based to vector by utilizing Adobe Streamline. Once he is in Illustrator, he can easily move the different objects to give different effects. David still has an agent in New Mexico who helps him get new clients and he still feels that it is important to advertise nationally in the Directory of Illustration. He completed three children book projects last year and is under contract for ten more over the next two years. A new development for David is he will be writing his first children’s book as well as illustrating it. Another new addition to David's household in December 2000 is his first child, Ben. David is looking forward to upgrading his G4/400 system to a G5, upgrading to the Adobe Creative Suite and learning OS X in 2004.
