September 2, 2004 Meeting Recap |
Sylvia Thomas,"Internet Security & Privacy on the Mac" |
Sylvia Thomas gave an interesting and helpful presentation at our September 2nd LBMG meeting. Sylvia has taught at the Torrance Adult School and is knowledgeable about internet security on both the Mac and PCs. Even though Macs haven't had the severe security issues that PCs have, she advised that Mac owners need to be aware of security problems. She suggested nine steps to better security: 1. Keep you OS up to date, using the Software Update on your Mac. 2. Use a virus scanner which also needs to be updated continuously. 3. Don't use your admin account for normal log-ins. 4. Use a firewall. Broadband is more vulnerable than other internet connections. 5. Don't open unknown attachments from friends and don't pass them on. 6. Do not give out sensitive information in email. 7. Only do business with trusted companies. 8. Use strong passwords, containg letters, numbers and symbols in each one. 9. Make backups! |
