Our June 6th meeting was also outstanding. Meeting for the first time
in the Library at Emerson because of construction taking place in the
Auditorium, we were filled to capacity to see what Coastline Community
College instructor Linda Calkins had to present about Illustrator 10.
She went through the prominent new features in Illustrator and showed
how they worked. Much time was spent on the new Symbols feature that allows
more flexibility in making changes that effect a good portion of an illustration
due to the ease of changing a symbol that effects its instances. She also
showed how easy it is to create different looks with Symbols because of
the new controls over Symbols. Linda also spent a good deal of time on
the new Enveloping and Warping tools in Illustrator 10. The Enveloping
Tool allows you to create a shape and have live, editable text placed
into the shape which is extremely powerful. The Warping Tool is very similar
to the Warping Tool that was introduced in Photoshop 6 and allows Type
to instantly be shaped as an arch, arc, bulged, shell, flag, wave, fish
shape, fisheye, inflated, squeezed, and twisted. These are very powerful
improvements. Linda also showed the use of the Gradient Mesh Tool as well
as creating blends and gradients.
