Howard
Goldstein, Graphics Sorcerer gave an outstanding talk on book and
magazine cover design. Howard
discussed several rules that good covers should have. The cover is
very important to lead to the sale of the book or magazine. Covers
must qualify the audience/buyer, attract their attention, present information,
and close the sale.
A couple of tips that cover designers should avoid are: Hard to read
type like paragraphs of red type; paragraphs of small or thin type
reversed out of black or color; fine or delicate serif type over tints,
etc.
The spine, front & back covers should all use the same colors,
type styles, and relate so that the viewer is not confused by the design.
Howard also gave us the criteria that books are evaluated for the Benjamin
Franklin Awards: The overall reaction, appearance, layout, organization,
color, photographs, illustrations, type style, symbols, paper, typography,
back—spine, front—spine, essentials, and printing are the
criteria that are judged.
Howard also brought examples of his art that were enthusiastically
shared with those in attendance. No raffle, but an excellent meeting!
