February 3, 2005 Meeting Recap

The meeting started off a little shaky as Roger Kroll forgot to bring his PowerBook. His mom, however saved the day and brought it to the meeting fairly quickly from her Belmont Shore home. In the interim, Roger demonstrated the functionality of the SupaCam DV6 <http://supacam.com/index2.htm>. The camera is extremely versatile for it's size. It takes 6 MegaPixel still images. A high resolution file in Photoshop's image size is 2976 x 2232 pixels; 6.2 in x 4.65 in @ 480 ppi that can be resized to 11 in x 8.25 in @ 270 ppi with no change to the image for printing with on an inkjet printer. For video, it takes 30 frames per second DVD MPEG4 resolution (640x480 pixels) and did a good job at the meeting as Roger took still images and video files of the audience which he showed on the PowerBook. It also comes with a MP3 player, recharger, 3.7 V rechargeable LI-ION battery (6 hours/charge), headphones, carry strap, carry case that can be attached to a belt, USB 2 cable, TV cable and editing software for a PC. Also included for Mac users is a link <www.divx.com/mac> for downloading a codec necessary for video playback in QuickTime. The price was $269 at MacWorld. The camera only comes with 16 mb of memory, so the purchase of additional memory is required. The DV6 uses SD memory and I went to Amazon and got a 1 GB SanDisk card for $77 that allows 550 high resolution stills or 1 hour nine minutes of video. You can also use the camera as a hard drive and move files between computers by connecting the USB cable and copying files to the camera which automatically appears on your Mac OS X desktop.

Once the computer arrived, Roger transferred the movies and still images to his computer by dragging the movie, photo and sound folders to his LBMG folder on his desktop. He renamed the folders in the finder to 0203 LBMG. He then renamed the files in Photoshop using Batch Rename making sure that view unreadable files was checked for the movies and sound files. He then opened up iPhoto 5.0.1 and dragged some photo folders from the finder onto iPhoto. This places several folders of images in the same album for editing and sharing. The editing function has been improved in iPhoto 5. There are now thumbnails above the main image in the edit and slideshow mode that allow easy reordering of the photos along with quickly going to the photo you wish to edit. There is an adjust popup in the edit mode that has options like Exposure, Color Adjustment, Straightening and Saturation that allow you to make changes without jumping back to a particular mode. There are now more slideshow options that allow you to keep a favorite shot onscreen for a longer duration with or without the Ken Burns Effect and you can now automatically sync your slideshow to the length of the music so both end simultaneously. You can now have set different transitions for each slide if you wish more variety. The iPhoto books has been improved and now come in three all-new sizes at three new low prices. A variety of new themes and backgrounds let you create the perfect book for any occasion, and the new book-building feature in iPhoto is so easy you'll have your personalized book done in no time. Integration with .Mac Homepage have also been improved and there are now 22 themes from which to choose. Support for photos taken in RAW format has also been brought into iPhoto 5.

The meeting concluded with a quick look at Keynote 2. Like iPhoto, there were many new themes added to the program as well as new transitions and build styles for more interesting presentations. Also added is a Presenter dashboard so that you can configure your second monitor to see the next slide, elapsed time and remaining time. There is also a Media Browser that allows you to drag photos from iPhoto or movies from your movie folder directly into Keynote. You can also export your slideshow as a Flash document.
